While I’ve been walking through this healing journey and learning to ask “what” rather than “why,” I’ve also been learning something else. Even though it seems like God’s voice is silent, it actually isn’t: He is walking the journey with us, gently nudging us toward the lessons he has for us to learn. He also provides us with encouragement as we strive to learn those lessons. Yes–even in the middle–there are blessings. We just need to learn to look for them. We need to consider that during this time God’s small blessing may be quiet, still, or even easy to miss.
If I’m being really honest, when this all began, I spent many, many hours praying for complete healing, clarity and big breakthroughs that never seemed to come and left me wondering if my prayers were even going past my ceiling. Maybe you’ve experienced something similar yourself. But slowly I started seeing the small encouraging things that God planted for me along the way…a day when I actually had energy, a conversation with someone or a social media post that made me feel like I wasn’t alone, and a doctor who finally listened to me.
Philippians 4:8 tells us, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” (ESV) Wow! Can you imagine what our days would be like if we spent more time thinking about the good around us, instead of whatever circumstances we’re currently facing? What if we focused on gratitude and made it a habit to write down just one good thing from each day?
Now, if you think I’m suggesting this is a walk in the park, oh no! It’s hard—some days harder than others—especially in that middle place we find ourselves, not really knowing if we should turn left or right, keep our foot on the brake, or shove the accelerator pedal to the floor and take a complete leap of faith. Not only is it hard, it can be extremely scary. But when we decide to start looking for even the smallest blessing in the wilderness rather than remaining hyper-focused on our circumstances, it allows us to take a deep breath and focus on the One who wants nothing more than the absolute best for us. So much so that He created the perfect plan for you even before you were born.
There is one thing that I really want you to remember…little things really add up. They remind us we’re still seen, we’re still loved, and we certainly have not been forgotten…even if the big healing we hoped for hasn’t come yet. The fact that healing is still coming, even slowly, gives me hope—not just for today but tomorrow too.
If you are in the middle of your own healing—physically, emotionally or spiritually—I won’t pretend it’s easy. When you find yourself dealing with something, especially for a prolonged period of time, it wears on you. The not knowing. The slow progress. The wondering if your prayers are even making it past the ceiling.
But I know this to be true:
God sees every step. Every tear. Every effort. Every prayer. Even when the answers seem small, or even invisible—He is still faithful!
Even if you don't think you have the strength, you get up each day willing to keep going, to keep trying—that is brave!
You don’t have to pretend everything is okay. You don’t even have to put a smile on your face if you don’t feel like it. You don’t have to pretend that you have it all together. It’s okay if you don’t. All you have to do is keep your eyes open for the little blessings that ultimately show you God’s love—and let them carry you through one more day.
